Until today, I didn't really realize that I had what's considered a double-fold eyelid; as a white, Northern European-descended individual, this is pretty much the rule. I've known that the Asian and Western eyes were different structurally since, oh...age 6, long before I had even met someone of Asian descent. I knew that the folds of skin around the eyes were different for the two ethnicities(with Asians having thicker folds), but not that it manifested itself into double- or single-lidded eyes. Considering how much I am entrenched in the East Asian culture and interact with people of that descendence, it's pretty sad to have not realized it before.
But, anyway, before I go on a tanget, I recently came across a site discussing cosmetic surgery trends in South Korea, in particular double-fold eyelid surgeries(that is, cutting the eyelid so that it creates a fold when it retracts). The statistic that I've seen quoted that 50%+ of Korean women in their 20s have had some form of cosmetic surgery, with a vast majority of those being double-fold eyelid surgery. In SK, it's become almost as common to get this surgery as it is to get braces, as one commented. And it's not like it's a long, difficult procedure- roughly 15mins to do the actual surgery, and a few days to a week of recovery as the swelling reduces.
With this amazing amount of procedures being done and the laissez-faire attitude towards it, it's interesting to note the reasons behind them.
With many people, including many older men and women, it is done to give the eyes a more youthful appearance, as the eyes become saggy and "tired-looking"; very similar to the reasons why many Westerners now flock to eye lifts and Botox injections around the brows, when you look at it. Also, many of the responses to this question was, especially when put towards young(mid-teens to early twenties) Korean women, was that having this double-fold eyelid surgery made them feel more beautiful. Women also tended to comment that the surgery made it much easier to apply eye makeup.
This eyelid procedure is often coupled with other fairly common procedures like nose building(that is, raising the bridge of the nose so that it reaches the forehead[commonly favoured in Mongoloid-backgrounded individuals, whose noses tend to fall short of that mark]) and chin sculpting(this gives the chin more definition, as sometimes the chin looks as one with the neck). These are often done in one go as a full-out makeover, and can provide a very startling and dramatic change in one's appearances.
Many would say that they are trying to look more "Western" in their appearances. But, in Asian populations, the double-fold eyelid is found in roughly half of the population(I do not know if there is a greater tendency in certain nationalities over others), albeit less pronounced than in European-descended individuals, so these "Western" eyes aren't truly "Western" and are a feature found naturally among the Asian populations. And when asked if they are trying to appear more Western, it is more often the rule than not for the reply to be no, that the double-fold eyelid merely makes them feel better about themselves and their appearance.
But these replies bring up an interesting notion -> Are Western looks becoming the model of beauty in the Asian nations, particularly in the lighter-skinned Far Eastern populations that can pull off a "Western" look easier, and that Asian women are following these notions of beauty sub-consciously due to the influx of Western media?
Personally, I think there are some trends in Asia to follow a more "Western" look, but overall I feel they are merely enhancing a definite and distinct "Asian" look with many of these procedures. Looking at J-pop/K-pop singers, easily those who are targeted with the accusation of "Westernization" the most, they oft have a distinctly Asian look, and very little in common appearance-wise to a model of European or African descent.
But what's everyone else's take on this? I know a vast majority of the people here are Asian-descended on at least one side of the family; I am interested in seeing how you all feel about this trend, if the assumptions of "Westernization" hold merit, if Western looks have become a sort of guideline for women around the world.
If I call your name gently into the night, will you hear the silent pleas in my voice?
Once upon a midnight dreary, while I websurfed, weak and weary,
Over many a strange and spurious website of 'hot chicks galore',
While I clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning,
And my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour.
"'Tis not possible," I muttered, "give me back my cheap hardcore!" -
Quoth the server, "404".
